Introduction to Brain Bubbles

In today’s masterclass, we’ll explore the 'Brain Bubbles' concept, where we’ll examine various aspects of being neurodivergent and how understanding these aspects can support our personal and family journeys. Neurodivergence is an umbrella term that includes but is not limited to autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and Tourette’s. The overarching idea is that neurodivergent brains simply think differently from neurotypical ones.

Acceptance in Neurodivergence

A major barrier in neurodivergent communities is acceptance. We statistically experience higher rates of early deaths, suicidality, risky behaviors, and complex relationships. A significant part of this challenge is accepting our unique brain wiring and finding the supports and accommodations that help us thrive authentically.

Choices

  • Values: Am I making choices that align with my core values? Am I prioritizing my own needs, or am I placing others’ needs first?
  • Decision-Making: How comfortable do I feel with the decisions I’ve made recently? Do I often second-guess or regret my choices?
  • Big Boss Voice: Am I able to tune into my “Big Boss Voice” when making decisions, or do I feel pressure from outside influences?

Cerebral

  • Living Life Neurodivergent: Am I embracing my neurodivergent identity, or do I feel the need to mask parts of myself?
  • Self-Acceptance: How accepting am I of my unique challenges and strengths? Do I feel comfortable discussing my accommodations?
  • Burnout: Am I noticing any signs of burnout? What am I doing to prevent or manage it?

Coordination

  • Executive Functioning: Am I able to manage daily tasks without feeling overwhelmed? Which tasks feel easy, and which ones drain my energy?
  • Embracing Your Sh*t: Am I realistic about my capabilities, or do I judge myself for struggling with certain things?
  • Habit Stacking: Am I creating small, sustainable habits that support me, or am I pushing myself too hard?

Coping

  • Stress Behavior: What stress responses have I noticed in myself lately? Am I managing my stress effectively, or are there areas for improvement?
  • Personality Traits (OCEAN): How does my openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, or neuroticism affect my well-being? Am I aware of my traits in stressful situations?
  • Balance: Am I striking a balance between coping and thriving, or does it feel like I'm constantly just getting by?

Calibration

  • Vagus Nerve: Am I making time for activities that reset and calm my nervous system? Do I notice the impact of these practices?
  • Sensory Bubble: How attuned am I to my sensory needs? Am I aware of when my environment is overstimulating or calming?
  • Little Things, Big Supports: What small, supportive actions help me feel grounded? Am I using them consistently?

Crazy Cat Lady

  • Attachment Style: How secure do I feel in my relationships? Am I able to reach out for support when I need it?
  • Connection: Am I connecting meaningfully with others, or do I feel isolated? How can I create more meaningful connections?
  • Expanding Your Story: Am I open to new perspectives on my life story, or do I feel stuck in past narratives?

Connection

  • Polyvagal Theory: Do I feel safe and supported in my relationships? Am I able to be my authentic self with those around me?
  • Bio Bubble: Am I respecting my personal boundaries, or do I feel invaded by others’ expectations?
  • Family Dynamics: How does my neurodivergence fit within my family? Do I feel like I have space to be fully myself?
